Program Description

Are you looking for a study abroad program in international development? Do you want to unlock some of the development issues small developing countries such as Belize face at the rural level?

Look no further! Say YES to the Sustainable Development study abroad program in Belize!

Our team designed a Sustainable Economic and Community Development (SECD) study program with numerous field trips, lectures, and cultural and historical immersive experiences that will unravel the challenges that small developing countries such as Belize grapple with in the 21st century.

Belize is one of the smallest countries in the world and often boasts of being the least populated country.

As a participant of the SECD program, you will examine the opportunities and challenges Belize wrestles with as it aims to provide economic prosperity for rural communities while balancing cultural and ecological preservation.

This exciting program is packed with field trips and lectures from the program’s professor and Belizean experts across key economic sectors. Get involved and get a feel for international development in the host community through the program’s community-based service projects.
As a participant, you connect directly and meaningfully to the people living and farming in a small migrant community in western Belize.

Program professor, Dr. Ydahlia Metzgen, is an economist, finance specialist, educator, and entrepreneur. She has lived in over 100 countries and was involved in many missions to help developing countries recover from economic crises.
Her expertise also spans institutional management with a proven track record of advancing economic policy initiatives and research agendas.

The SECD program is multidisciplinary and open to students from various majors and minors. The program is credit-eligible for 3 academic credits.
